Auburn schools approve FY27 budget as Title One funding plummets

Auburn School Committee approves FY27 budget with 3.92 percent increase despite federal Title One funding dropping from approximately $269,000 to $110,000, eliminating two of four funding streams and placing five paraprofessional and tutoring positions in limbo pending July award notification. Superintendent Beth Chamberland said cutting any of these positions would hurt schools. The committee also unanimously approved a $314,000 warrant article for a new generator at Auburn High School, designated an emergency evacuation site, and authorized a March 20 make-up day after a February odor-related closure, with 92.5 percent of staff and 71 percent of families surveyed supporting the date.
