Auburn fire station panel approves $1.26 million in contractor payments
Other Committee · Meeting of July 7, 2026
Auburn fire station committee approves $1.26 million in payments, weighs a cheaper traffic-signal fix. Left Field project representative Joe Sullivan reported footings and foundations are largely complete despite summer heat, with a building permit expected within the week. The committee unanimously approved requisition number one for $486,411.83 and requisition number two, not to exceed $772,985.93, bringing the contractor's net payment to $1,259,397.76 after retainage.
Fire Chief Coleman told members that adding a traditional Opticom traffic emitter at Washington and Prospect streets would trigger a MassDOT-mandated intersection overhaul costing "somewhere between one and a half to two million dollars." Coleman is instead pursuing a GPS-based system called Glance, already used at 15 Auburn intersections, quoted at $175,000 to switch the department's 25 vehicle units, with town counsel to review whether the swap stays within the project's approved budget scope.
