Auburn fire panel approves $264,946 change order for site work
Other Committee · Meeting of September 15, 2026
Auburn fire station panel approves $264,946 in change orders, weighs $450,000 fix for a bay too narrow for truck jacks. The Fire Station Building Committee unanimously approved a $230,430.92 payment for final underground ledge removal and a $34,515 site-work package linking the station's parking lot to an adjacent park and the neighboring Dunkin' Donuts lot, for a combined $264,945.92. Members also approved Pay Requisition No. 4 for $1,041,954.71, with the project reported at 15.57 percent complete.
The Fire Chief and a presenter identified as Glenn told the committee that earlier value-engineering cuts, which trimmed 950 square feet and saved more than $700,000, narrowed the mechanic's bay to about 18 feet, leaving no room for the originally planned truck jacks and no way to lift the department's ladder truck. A proposed in-ground lift system, priced at roughly $270,000 for the units alone, carries a working estimate "not to exceed $450,000." One member invoked the project's $4.2 million in bid savings, warning against "the $3,000 decision in 1964 not to upgrade the steel." No vote was taken because the item was not on the agenda.
