Auburn library trustees adopt two policies in unanimous votes
Library · Meeting of September 3, 2026
Auburn library trustees pass five unanimous votes, from a policy overhaul to a goat-themed staff outing. The Board of Trustees voted 6-0 five times Thursday: retaining attorney Alex Castro of Mead, Talerman and Costa on an open meeting law complaint, adopting a new programming policy, updating its appropriate library use policy to add a ban-appeal process, approving $500 in trust funds for a staff team-building event featuring baby goats from Good Pickin' Farm, and authorizing a Dec. 26 closure. Library Director Michael Zeller told the board a Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court ruling bars public bodies from censoring public comment, warning "we cannot in any way censor public comment." August brought 10,661 visitors and 82 programs with 2,482 attendees, and Zeller flagged a new state law, signed Aug. 10, protecting librarians "from punitive legal measures" amid rising book-challenge campaigns.
