Select Board · Meeting of October 26, 2026

AUBURN — The Auburn Select Board heard police warn of rising call volumes and mandatory overtime, prompting a proposed staffing increase from 45 to 51 officers over three years. The department reported 4,475 of 20,358 calls required two or more officers, with roughly 38.2 percent of open patrol shifts filled through forced overtime. The board also reviewed a Department of Public Works memo explaining why a Bancroft Street sidewalk extension was skipped this year, citing an estimated $700,000 cost, about $600,000 more than the $100,000 repaving already completed.

Members voted to set a tax classification hearing for November 9 and to appoint James Hargrove to the Auburn Housing Authority's tenant member seat. The board also began reworking its senior tax work-off program after staff found no formal policy governs income or asset limits, with one member saying any cap should be "the same across all of our programs." No vote was taken on police staffing or the work-off program; both return for further discussion.
