Auburn school panel adopts immigration guidelines, closes DESE review
School Committee · Meeting of September 16, 2026
Auburn School Committee closes out a two-year state compliance review and finalizes immigration-enforcement guidelines for schools. The district's English learner program director, identified in the meeting only as Alan, told the committee the state Department of Elementary and Secondary Education confirmed on September 9 that Auburn had satisfied all items from a review that once found six of twelve required criteria only partially implemented. Superintendent Dr.
Scazza, whose name was heard inconsistently in the meeting audio, said the district's new civil immigration enforcement guidelines, built under the governor's PROTECT Act, have been reviewed with every principal. Business Manager Jen Stanek reported the district has used 94 percent of its budget, leaving about $2 million available, and the committee voted unanimously to cap the Auburn High School and Auburn Middle School activity checking accounts at $15,000 and $12,000. Food Service Director Breanne Fulmer said her department has "replaced three heating elements in 18 months" on a high school dishwasher due to mineral-heavy water, and reported newly renovated cafeterias seating 204 and 232 students at Swanson Road and Auburn Middle School.
